A Shopify store that sells well in the Gulf needs a real Arabic right-to-left layout (Shopify’s Horizon themes support it natively; other themes need checking or custom work), Arabic content written for Gulf shoppers rather than machine-translated, AED pricing with Shopify Payments or another UAE gateway, Tabby and Tamara at checkout, VAT handled correctly, and delivery promises that match what Aramex or your courier actually does. Here is how each piece works.
1. Right-to-left is a layout, not a translation
Turning on Arabic in Shopify adds a language. It does not, by itself, make the page read from right to left. Shopify’s language requirements say the latest themes in the Horizon family support right-to-left languages such as Arabic, and that with any other theme you should confirm right-to-left support before launching. In a custom theme, the store’s locale exposes a direction value of rtl or ltr, which the theme uses to set the page direction.
What to check on every template in Arabic:
- Navigation, breadcrumbs and menus run right to left.
- Arrows and chevrons are mirrored; logos, product photos and media are not.
- Product galleries swipe in the natural direction for Arabic readers.
- Prices, sizes and phone numbers stay readable when they sit inside Arabic text.
- The Arabic font is chosen for Arabic, with proper weights, not a Latin font falling back.
- Cart, drawer and checkout open from the correct side.
2. Arabic content that sells
Gulf shoppers notice translated copy instantly. Product names, sizing notes and delivery promises should be written by a native Arabic writer who knows the category, then loaded through Shopify’s Translate and Adapt app or a translation app. Shopify’s checkout already comes pre-translated in many languages, so the work is in your theme, product content and policies. Keep product handles in Latin script so URLs stay stable across languages, and let each language live in its own subfolder so Google can index both.
3. Payments Gulf shoppers expect
| Method | How it works on Shopify | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cards, Apple Pay | Shopify Payments is available to UAE businesses for online payments, or a UAE gateway | Shopify Payments also enables local-currency checkout through Markets |
| Tabby | Tabby’s Shopify payment app, with webhooks configured | Accepts billing addresses in the UAE and Saudi Arabia only, in AED or SAR; email and phone must be required at checkout |
| Tamara | Tamara’s Shopify payment app, free to install | Pay in full or in instalments; requires a Tamara merchant account |
| Cash on delivery | Shopify’s manual payment method | Still common; set limits by order value and area to control returns |
Show buy-now-pay-later on the product page, not only at checkout. “Or 4 payments of AED 99” next to the price is one of the most effective conversion lines in Gulf ecommerce, and the providers supply the widgets.
4. VAT and invoices
UAE VAT is charged at 5%. Configure Shopify with tax-inclusive prices, which is what shoppers expect, and make sure your invoices carry your Tax Registration Number. Exports outside the GCC may qualify for zero-rating if the conditions are met; your adviser should confirm before you rely on it.
E-invoicing is coming. The Ministry of Finance has published the rollout: businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more appoint an accredited service provider by 30 October 2026 and go live by 1 January 2027; businesses below that appoint one by 31 March 2027 and go live by 1 July 2027. E-invoices are structured data exchanged through accredited providers, not PDFs. Check with your adviser how your Shopify sales fall within scope, and choose an invoicing setup that can feed a provider.
5. Delivery and returns
- Couriers. Aramex and the regional couriers integrate through apps; same-day delivery in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is a real differentiator worth showing on the product page if you offer it.
- Addresses. UAE addresses do not use postcodes. Make sure no app or custom form forces one, and ask for a landmark or area field because couriers rely on it.
- Phone numbers. Couriers call before delivery. Require a phone number and validate the format.
- Returns. State the window and who pays in Arabic and English, and plan how cash-on-delivery refunds are paid back.
6. Selling into Saudi Arabia and the rest of the GCC
Shopify Markets lets the same store sell to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman with their own currency display, prices and shipping. Saudi Arabia has its own VAT rate and its own e-invoicing system, so selling there at scale is a tax decision as much as a store setting. See Shopify Markets explained for the store side.
A Gulf store wins on three lines of the product page: the price in dirhams, “or 4 payments”, and the delivery date.
7. Getting found in Arabic and English
Arabic and English searches behave differently, and both now trigger AI answers. Give each language its own titles and descriptions, write Arabic buying guides for the questions Gulf shoppers ask, and check that the alternate-language tags pair each English page with its Arabic version. Yes, for online payments. Shopify lists the UAE among supported countries. It is not available for in-person point-of-sale processing there.
Can I offer Tabby and Tamara on Shopify?
Yes. Both have Shopify payment apps. Tabby’s app accepts orders with billing addresses in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, in AED or SAR.
When does UAE e-invoicing start?
Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more must go live by 1 January 2027, and smaller businesses by 1 July 2027, after appointing an accredited service provider.
