Shopify SEO checklist for 2026: India and international

Shopify SEO has a handful of problems that no other platform has: duplicate product URLs created by collections, thin collection pages, tag and filter pages that get indexed, and apps that slow the store down. This checklist covers those first, then the standard technical, content and schema items, then the extra steps for Indian stores and for stores selling in more than one country.

Shopify-specific fixes

1. Duplicate product URLs

Shopify serves every product at /products/handle and again at /collections/collection-handle/products/handle. The canonical tag points to the short URL, which is correct, but internal links from collection pages usually point to the long one. Edit the theme so product cards link to the canonical URL. One template change removes thousands of duplicate signals.

2. Collection pages with no content

A collection page that is only a grid of products has nothing to rank with. Add 150 to 400 words below the grid: what the collection is, who it is for, how to choose, with internal links to the key products and a question-led FAQ. This is where “best sarees for weddings” or “running shoes for flat feet” queries are won.

3. Tag, filter and search pages

Tag pages (/collections/all/tagname) and filtered URLs can create hundreds of near-duplicate pages. Keep them out of the index with a noindex rule in the theme for tag and filter views, and make sure the sitemap does not list them.

4. App bloat and speed

Every app adds scripts, and many keep adding them after you uninstall. Audit the theme for leftover app code, remove apps you do not use, compress images, and measure with PageSpeed Insights on a product page, not just the homepage. On a services site we cut homepage load from 489 ms to 197 ms by removing requests; Shopify stores usually have more to remove, not less.

5. The blog nobody uses

Shopify’s blog is basic but indexable. Use it for the questions your buyers ask before they buy, one question per article, linked from the relevant collection.

Technical checks

  • Sitemap and Search Console. Submit /sitemap.xml, check coverage monthly, fix anything “crawled, not indexed”.
  • Redirects after a migration. Every old URL mapped one to one to its new URL, including images that ranked. No chains.
  • Canonicals on variants. Variant URLs with ?variant= must canonicalise to the product.
  • Image alt text. Describe the product and its attribute, not the file name. Shopify lets you set alt text per image in the admin.
  • Core Web Vitals. Lazy-load below-the-fold images, set width and height, avoid layout shift from late-loading apps and announcement bars.
  • HTTPS and www. One primary domain, everything else redirected.

Schema Shopify does not add for you

Most themes add basic Product schema. Check it in a validator, then make sure it includes offers with price and currency, availability, brand, SKU, and aggregate rating when you have reviews. Add BreadcrumbList, Organization with sameAs links, FAQPage on collection pages that carry a FAQ, and Article on blog posts. Accurate schema is what lets AI answer engines name your product in a “best X for Y” answer; see GEO for Shopify.

Content that ranks and converts

  • Unique product descriptions, never the manufacturer’s text, with sizing, materials, care and shipping answered in the text.
  • Buying guides for comparison queries, honest about trade-offs.
  • Question-led FAQs on products and collections, mirrored in FAQ schema.
  • Internal links from blog to collection to product, so authority flows to the pages that sell.

Selling in India: extra items

  • GST-inclusive prices. Display tax-inclusive prices and make sure Product schema carries the same price shoppers see.
  • Search terms in two languages. Many Indian shoppers search in Hinglish or regional terms; add them naturally to collection copy and FAQs.
  • Cash on delivery and pincode checks. Say on the product page that COD exists and where; it is a search query and a conversion factor.
  • Google Merchant Center. Free listings in India depend on a clean feed with correct GST-inclusive prices and availability.
  • Orders into accounting. Not SEO, but the thing that stops at midnight: our app LedgerBridge posts Shopify orders to Tally Prime with GST by place of supply. See Shopify for India.

Selling internationally: extra items

  • Shopify Markets, not separate stores, unless you have a reason. One catalogue, per-market currency, duties and language.
  • hreflang. Shopify generates it for Markets with subfolders or domains; verify it in Search Console’s international report after launch.
  • Localised content, not just translated prices: sizes, shipping times, returns and payment methods per market, on the page.
  • Local payment methods on the page. Tabby and Tamara for the Gulf, Klarna for the UK, Afterpay for Australia: naming them answers a question shoppers search for. See Shopify for Dubai and the UAE and UK and US.

Fix the duplicate URLs, write the collection pages, remove the apps you do not use. Most Shopify stores would gain more from those three than from a year of link building.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have good SEO out of the box?

Adequate, not good. The platform handles sitemaps, canonicals and HTTPS, but creates duplicate product URLs through collections, leaves collection pages thin, and indexes tag pages unless you stop it. All of it is fixable in the theme.

Which Shopify SEO apps are worth it?

Fewer than you think. Most of what SEO apps do (meta tags, alt text, redirects, schema) can be done in the theme and the admin without adding scripts. Use an app for bulk editing if you have thousands of products; avoid apps that inject schema you cannot inspect.

How long does Shopify SEO take to work?

Technical fixes show in Search Console within weeks. Collection content and buying guides take two to four months to rank for competitive terms. Nobody can guarantee rankings; what we measure is indexed pages, impressions, clicks and the questions you win.
